Brad Stuart is expected to sign a three-year contract with the San Jose Sharks in the coming days, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
Assuming the deal is announced as expected, Stuart won’t become an unrestricted free agent once the 2012 NHL free agency period begins on July 1. Stuart should give the Sharks’ penalty kill a much-needed boost. He played more shorthanded minutes than any other Red Wings defender this past season. San Jose had the league’s second-worst penalty-kill unit.
Stuart led Detroit with 177 hits last season, and was second with 115 blocked shots. He was less effective on the offensive end, where he notched six goals and 15 assists in 81 games played.
