The Detroit Red Wings have locked up Darren Helm for the next four years, keeping them for looking elsewhere for a penalty killing ace. Helm's contract is a bit bigger than previously expected, but the terms should end up being a good deal for both parties.

If the Detroit Red Wings' front office entered the playoffs unsure about whether or not Helm would be worth retaining at a cost of just over $2 million per year, they got a bit of a wake-up call when the team got dumped out in the first round by the Nashville Predators without an injured Helm. The 25-year-old is a key fixture on the team's third line and penalty kill units, and the Wings will be thrilled to have him locked up for his best years.
