The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday morning that they've signed No. 1 overall draft choice Nail Yakupov to his three-year entry-level contract. Financial terms were not disclosed but it's safe to assume that Yakupov will earn the entry-level maximum salary of $925,000 plus any number of signing and performance bonuses.

“We’re very happy to sign Nail to a three-year contract,” general manager Steve Tambellini said in a statement. “He’s an extremely talented and passionate young man who we feel will be an integral part of our team for many years to come.”

A native of Russia, Yakupov played junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League as a member of the Sarnia Sting. He compiled 170 points -- 80 goals and 90 assists -- in 107 games with the Sting over two seasons. He was a member of Russia’s silver medal-winning team at the 2012 World Junior Championships this past winter. Russia won the tournament with Yakupov in 2011.
