Devils Sign 1st Round Draft Pick Stefan Matteau
The Devils signed their first-round draft pick, forward Stefan Matteau, to an entry-level contract on Tuesday.

Matteau, only 18, is a strong, physical forward, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 215 pounds. Matteau played in 46 games with USA Hockey’s under-18 team this past year, scoring 32 points on 15 goals and 17 assists while racking up a team-leading 166 penalty minutes. He certainly has a mean streak, a seven-game suspension last season and an eight-game suspension in 2010-11.
Matteau's name doesn't bring up the best of memories in New Jersey. His father, Stephane Matteau, was a former NHL player who scored the game-winning goal in double overtime of Game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference finals, in which his New York Rangers eliminated the Devils. Despite the legacy connection, the Rangers passed on Stefan Matteau at the 28th pick in the 2012 NHL draft, and the Devils snatched him up with the next selection.
