Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo will have surgery for a lower-body injury "very soon," a source told Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Monday.

Pietrangelo suffered a sprained knee when he was checked into the boards by Dwight King of the Los Angeles Kings during Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, but told reporters in May that no surgery was necessary for that injury. It is not known at this point whether or not the surgery set to take place is related to that injury.

The 22-year-old defenseman from Canada was named to the NHL second all-star team for the 2011-12 season after recording 51 points in 81 games played during the season.

A gold medalist as a member of the 2009 Canadian team in the World Junior Championships, Pietrangelo is expected to be a member of the country’s team for the 2014 Olympics.
