The Boston Bruins have locked up a young star in right wing Tyler Seguin, signing him to a deal that will pay the team's leading scorer $34.5 million and keep him in Boston through the 2018-2019 season.

The Boston Bruins have reached a six-year contract with Tyler Seguin, making sure the 20-year-old who led the team in scoring this past year has a long-term future with the club.

Seguin surpassed already high expectations in just his second NHL season: the 20-year-old contributed as a rookie when the team hoisted the 2011 Stanley Cup and led the team with 28 goals and 67 points this past season, including seven game-winning goals. Seguin's plus-minus of +34 was second in the league behind only the Bruins' center after whom Seguin once said he wanted to model his playing style, Patrice Bergeron.
Although a lockout puts the upcoming hockey season in jeopardy, the Bruins are wise to want to lock up Seguin while they can. The 6’1 youngster will provide a spark to the Bruins whenever hockey does happen, and $5.75 million a year is hardly a bad deal for the future face of the franchise.
