The NHL is not officially open for business, but as soon as the doors open this weekend following the ratification of the new CBA, the Washington Capitals are expected to sign forward Eric Fehr to a cheap one-year contract.

The news comes via the Washington Times, which reports that Fehr will join the Caps on a $600,000 deal. He’ll earn slightly more than half of that salary due to the shortened season and will be an unrestricted free agent this coming summer.
Fehr played parts of five seasons with the Capitals to start his career. After signing a two-year, $4.4 million contract with the Capitals before the 2010 season, Fehr was traded to the Winnipeg Jets prior to the 2011 season. He dealt with injury woes and scored just two goal and an assist in 35 games with Winnipeg during the 2011-12 season. He was a restricted free agent but was not extended a qualifying offer by the Jets over the offseason.
During the lockout, Fehr played in Finland’s top tier league, SM-liiga, scoring 25 points in 21 games with club HPK Hameenlinna. Provided he’s now healthy, Fehr should provide the Capitals with solid depth and the potential for some added scoring punch.
