Hal Gill contract: Flyers agree to terms on 1-year deal with defenseman

The Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Hal Gill.

The Philadelphia Flyers have come to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Hal Gill, the team announced Tuesday morning. Gill will be paid $700,000 this season, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN.

Gill was invited to Philadelphia’s training camp on a professional tryout contract and impressed the team enough to earn a standard player contract. The 38-year-old appeared in three exhibition games and recorded two assists over that span. It’s believed that Gill will act as a depth defenseman, the extent of which remains to be seen.

Philadelphia’s blue line is crowded at the moment, with the top-six seemingly in place. However, rumors have indicated that the Flyers might be looking to move a piece from the backend to strengthen another area of the team, or to clear space under the salary cap.

In addition to Gill, Philadelphia also has 24-year-old defenseman Erik Gustafsson who is seemingly on the outside looking in on a defense corps that includes Andrej Meszaros, Braydon Coburn, Kimmo Timonen, Luke Schenn, Mark Streit and Nicklas Gorssmann.
