Winter Olympics: Carl Soderberg reportedly disqualified from Team Sweden

Carl Soderberg will not be eligible to play for Sweden at the Olympics because of his decision to join the Boston bruins last spring.

USA TODAY Sports

Boston Bruins forward Carl Soderberg will not be eligible to play for Sweden at the 2014 Sochi Olympics because of his decision to play for the Bruins last year, according to a report by Mattias Ek of Sport-Expressen.

Soderberg elected to join Boston for the end of the NHL season instead of playing for Sweden at the World Championships. Sweden was hosting the event and was attempting to keep Soderberg from joining the Bruins by blocking his transfer agreement. Ultimately, the attempts proved ineffective, as the forward traveled to North America in April after agreeing to a three-year contract with Boston.

However, that decision is apparently coming back to haunt him as Sweden’s head coach, Pat Marts, stated that he had disqualified Soderberg from consideration. Marts stated that the deicision was his alone and did not involve the Swedish Ice Hockey Association.
