The Phoenix Coyotes added some depth on Saturday, signing veteran center Jeff Halpern to a one-year, two-way deal. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 37-year-old center played with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers last season, finishing with one goal and two assists in 46 games. Halpern failed to latch onto a team this past summer. He originally signed a short-term deal with Finnish team TPS Turku. According to NHL rules, he must now clear waivers because he played two games in Finland before signing with Phoenix.
Halpern is something of a journeyman, having also played with the Capitals, Kings, Lightning and Stars during his 13-year career in the NHL. He's registered 147 goals and 361 points in 907 NHL games. He'll most likely serve as a checking-line forward, as his greatest strengths lie in faceoffs and penalty killing.
