NHL scores: Ducks rout Senators, Devils remain winless

We’re two weeks into the NHL season, and it’s clear that more than a few teams are still working out the preseason kinks.

Take the Ottawa Senators, for example. The Sens showed us they’re capable of a playoff run last summer, yet continually give up 50-plus shots every night. The Hurricanes have a talented roster, yet consistently make mistakes that keep them from taking control of games. The Devils appeared Stanley Cup Final two years ago, but now they can’t score a goal or hold a lead at all.

It’s early. But these flaws might be indicative of where these teams are going this season if they don’t figure things out soon enough.

On Sunday, we asked you five burning questions about the day’s games. These are you cool, soothing answers.

The Mighty Ducks apparel looked pretty sweet, but I have to give the nod to Bobby Ryan here. Y’know, since he’s an actual person. Ryan scored the Senators’ only goal in his return to Southern California and was one of only four Sens with more than two shots on net. In an otherwise pitiful performance from Ottawa, Bobby Ryan stood out.

The Devils, though it took them awhile. New Jersey held fast to a one-goal deficit until the final minute of the game, when they gave up the dagger goal with goalie Cory Schneider on the bench for the extra attacker. Then they gave up another one just 20 seconds later with Schneider actually in the net. New Jersey still has yet to win a game this season.

Nope. Barkov managed only one shot and gave the puck away twice as he watched his point-streak come to an end on Sunday. Markstrom didn’t have an awful game considering the Panthers got outshot 16-8 in the second period, but sometimes you’ve got to pick your team up when they’re struggling to score.

The good kind. The two teams combined for 14 power plays on Sunday, but the Coyotes were the team that took advantage. Carolina had four opportunities on the man advantage in the third period, but came up empty, while Rob Klinkhammer and Shane Doan each scored to help the Coyotes pull away for good. The Hurricanes looked like they lacked confidence all game on special teams.

5. Will the Senators tighten up in their own zone?
A day after giving up 50 shots to the San Jose Sharks, the Senators gave up 56 more on Sunday to the Ducks. Coach Paul MacClean must have sensed it, pulling goalie Craig Anderson after he gave up two goals on nine shots in the four minutes. Ottawa got completely dominated, leaving Anaheim free to do whatever they pleased in the offensive zone.

Bobby Ryan’s return to Anaheim was a disaster for the Senators. But hey, at least he’ll always have this nifty goal:
