The New York Rangers waived forward Arron Asham and goaltender Martin Biron on Monday afternoon, the team announced.

Arron Asham and Martin Biron have both been waived by the New York Rangers.

Head coach Alain Vigneault stated the decision to waive Biron was solely based on performance and stated his contract wasn’t a factor in the decision. Asham stated that his contract and performance were both factors in his inclusion on waivers. Asham is in the final year of a two-year contract that carries an annual average value of $1 million against the salary cap, according to CapGeek.com.
When asked about his future, Biron confirmed that retirement might be an option he pursues. The 36-year-old stated that he wanted to take sometime to discuss the situation with his family. The Rangers attempted to hold a competition for the backup goaltender position in training camp by signing Johan Hedberg to a professional tryout contract. He was ultimately cut before camp ended.
Both players will be eligible to join the Hartford Wolf Pack if they clear waivers by noon on Tuesday. It remains unclear how the Rangers will fill the position, but ESPN’s Katie Strang speculates that Cam Talbot will be recalled from Hartford.
