For the second time in a week, an NHL defenseman had to be removed on a stretcher following a hit from behind. Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall left Thursday's game on a stretcher after taking a hit from behind by Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod.

The incident occurred a little over two minutes into the game.
McLeod was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. The Red Wings announced that Kronwall has a concussion, cuts to his ear and is moving all extremities.
Earlier this week, San Jose Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle was on the receiving end of a hit from behind by St. Louis Blues forward Maxim Lapierre, a hit that has resulted in an in-person hearing with the NHL on Friday.
Kronwall has taken over as Detroit's No. 1 defenseman in recent years following the retirements of Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski, and is coming off what was perhaps the best season of his career a year ago.
