Ilya Bryzgalov rumors: Goalie close to signing with ECHL’s Las Vegas Wranglers?

Former Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov could be close to signing a contract with Las Vegas of the ECHL

After a disastrous two-year run with the Philadelphia Flyers, which ended this summer with a compliance buyout, goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has not yet been able to secure a spot with another NHL club.

It now appears that his next career stop could be his most outrageous one yet.

According to a report from TSN’s Darren Dreger on Wednesday night, Bryzgalov could be on the verge of signing a contract with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL.

And that just pretty much came out of left field, which is really the only thing that we should expect from Bryzgalov at this point.

Bryzgalov signed a nine-year, $51 million contract with the Flyers prior to the 2011-12 season after he put up huge numbers with the Phoenix Coyotes 2008-11. The hope was that he would solidify what had been a constant position of weakness and uncertainty for a team that always seemed to be a goaltender away.

It was one of the biggest moves in an offseason that saw general manager Paul Holmgren rebuild his team on the fly, including blockbuster trades that sent Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings and Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In the end, the Bryzgalov move never worked out as planned. His play fell off a cliff almost as soon as he arrived in Philadelphia, resulting in the buyout this past summer.
