Phoenix Coyotes center Martin Hanzal will have a hearing with the NHL on Monday for his hit on Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Saturday.
Martin Hanzal to face NHL discipline for Jeff Petry hit
The Phoenix Coyotes’ forward will meet with the NHL on Monday.

The hit occurred at 13:42 of the first period on Saturday, when Hanzal laid into Petry along the boards as the Coyotes forechecked in the Edmonton zone. Petry wasn’t seriously hurt on the play, but Hanzal was assessed a two-minute minor for charging. Phoenix went on to win 5-4 over the Oilers.
Here’s the play in question:
Hanzal has been suspended one other time in his career, having been forced to sit for one game after boarding Los Angeles Kings winger Dustin Brown.
If Hanzal is suspended again, he’ll leave a big hole for the Coyotes to fill on offense. Hanzal has five goals and 11 points in 12 games so far this season.
