The Minnesota Wild have come to terms on a five-year contract extension with forward Jason Pominville, the team announced on Thursday morning. Pominville will receive $28 million over the course of the deal, which will amount to a $5.6 million annual average value against the salary cap, according to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The two sides had been engaging in negotiations since before training camp. Pominville is entering the final year of a five-year, $26.5 million contract and would have become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Russo reported on Wednesday that Pominville was seeking a multi-year deal with an annual value north of $5 million and that the sides were fairly close in the negotiations.
Ultimately, they found a way to bridge the gap on whatever remaining issues they had.
The Wild acquired Pominville prior to last season’s trade deadline from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Johan Larsson, Matt Hackett, a first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2014 draft.
In 10 games with the Wild, Pominville recorded nine points (four goals, five assists) while averaging 17:31 of ice-time per game.
