Washington Capitals defenseman Jack Hillen will undergo surgery on Friday and is projected to miss months of time, according to coach Adam Oates.

Jack Hillen is expected to miss months of time and will undergo surgery on Friday after sustaining an injury on Thursday night.

The injury is not considered career threatening, but will require an extensive period of recovery time. Hillen sustained a lower-body injury after being hit by forward Lance Bouma in the first period of Thursday night's home opener against the Calgary Flames. Katie Carrera of the Washington Post identified the injury as Hillen's right leg or knee, but a specific area wasn't disclosed by the team.
It’s assumed the team will place Hillen on long term injured reserve for the duration of his absence, as it will remove his $700,000 annual average value from the salary cap.
In terms of replacement, Oates stated that the club will either play Steve Olesky on his weak side or use recently acquired defenseman Alex Urbom, who the team claimed on waivers from the New Jersey Devils on Thursday.
