Ryan Callahan to make season debut on Monday for Rangers

New York’s captain is finally ready to play after healing from offseason shoulder injury.

New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan is set to make his season debut on Monday against Los Angeles, coach Alain Vigneault confirmed on Friday.

Callahan underwent surgery on his left shoulder this offseason and has been rehabbing throughout the preseason. Although he’s been cleared for contact and practiced with the team for the past week, the Rangers’ coaching staff held him out of the season opener in Phoenix as a precaution. Callahan told reporters he “felt good” on Friday.

It appears Callahan will start on either the third or fourth line, potentially forcing rookie Jesper Fast out of the lineup. The Rangers are still without top-six forward Carl Hagelin, who underwent the same shoulder surgery as Callahan but is much farther behind in his recovery. Hagelin is on long-term injured reserve and is ineligible to play for the next nine games.
