NHL scores: Jets outlast Sharks, Oilers fall short in Chicago

Bad things happen when you don’t close teams out.

In the NHL, success often means finishing when the game is close. A few teams figured that out the hard way on Sunday.

The much-maligned Edmonton Oilers had the Chicago Blackhawks under their boot midway through the third period. Believe it or not, finishing off the defending champions in their own barn when you've only won four games all season does wonders for team morale. And yet they couldn't do it. Chicago slipped out from under their heel and stole the win.

The Sharks can relate. San Jose let Winnipeg rally from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to tie things up heading into the final frame. Considering the Jets won in the shootout, those missed chances to shut down Winnipeg would prove to be the Sharks' undoing.

1. Can the Islanders avoid a winless road trip?

Nope. New York heads home on a four-game losing streak after a 4-2 whipping in Montreal on Sunday. To be fair, the loss was more competitive than the previous three. But it's obvious that this team is in a bad funk right now, and an extended absence from Thomas Vanek isn't helping.

2. Will the Sharks snap their losing streak?
I’m not sure the Sharks expected to get into a offensive showdown with the Jets, but that’s exactly what happened. San Jose played well just to take the Jets to the shootout, but a loss is a loss. And this loss kept the Sharks from gaining any separation from the rest of the Pacific teams.

3. Will the real Evander Kane show up?

He was minus-1 with no points and just three shots on goal. So... no. Or maybe this is the real Evander Kane.

4. Will the Oilers get out of their funk?

They came ever so close to beating the Blackhawks at home, but eventually gave into a 5-4 defeat. It's not like you can blame this one on the goaltending again. Devan Dubnyk stopped 31 of 36 shots and kept the Oilers in a game that could've gotten well out of hand.

5. Will the Ducks finally lose at home?

It sure looked like it for awhile there. Vancouver outshot Anaheim 36-23, and the differential was much wider than that at some points. Yet the Ducks still managed to earn a 3-1 win. Something about that Honda Center, man.

The one play or moment from Saturday’s games that will be making headlines over the next couple of days.

It didn't get a ton of publicity, but this hit from Chris Kreider should warrant some attention around the league.

I’m no rulebook expert, but the phrase “defenseless player” comes to mind. And to be blunt, it was both uncalled for and dangerous. Don’t be surprised if the NHL comes calling.
