The Buffalo Sabres have announced a news conference for 10:30 ET on Wednesday morning where the club is expected to announce the development of a president of hockey operations position. Bob McKenzie of TSN is reporting that former-Sabre, Pat LaFontaine, is expected to be introduced as the individual tasked with filling the position.

President of hockey operations is a trendy development in the NHL, as several teams have debuted the position over the last year. The Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and St. Louis Blues have all restructured their management hierarchy in recent months with addition of this role. St. Louis is the only organization of those previously listed who have the same individual acting as president of hockey operations and as general manager (Doug Armstrong).
In most cases, the position acts as a buffer between the manager. As of this time, it remains unclear whether that’s the case. Bucky Gleason of The Buffalo News is reporting that manager Darcy Regier and head coach Ron Rolston will be fired. Gleason is also reporting that former-coach Ted Nolan will be hired as Rolston’s replacement.
