Martin Erat requests trade from Capitals

Martin Erat has requested a trade out of Washington.

Washington Capitals forward Martin Erat confirmed that he has requested a trade, citing a lack of opportunity with the club. This marks the second consecutive season that Erat has made such a request, as he was acquired via trade from the Nashville Predators moments before last year's deadline.

In total, Erat has played 32 regular season games with the Capitals, in addition to four postseason appearances. Time on ice has been an established concern of Erat’s, as his has averaged five less minutes per game since joining the Capitals last season compared to his time with Nashville.

Erat has two years remaining on his contract, which carries an annual average value of $4.5 million against the salary cap. He was acquired for 19-year-old prospect Filip Forsberg, who Washington selected with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.
