Carolina Hurricanes forward Kevin Westgarth has been suspended two games by the NHL's Department of Player Safety, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Hurricanes’ Westgarth has been suspended two games for boarding Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki.


Westagrth connected on an illegal check of Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki in the first period of Sunday's game. The Carolina forward was assessed a minor penalty for boarding, while Borowiecki only played 2:03 over the span of four shifts.
Ottawa has not played since but will challenge the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night:
The Department of Player Safety put the responsibility on Westgarth for the play and took into account that he has never been suspended, in addition to Borowiecki being injured on the play.
Westgarth will be lose $7,435.90 over the span of the suspension, which will be donated to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
