Michal Neuvirth injured in warmups accident, Capitals recall Grubauer

Washington has no timetable for Neuvirth’s return.

Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth won't travel with the team to New York after suffering a freak injury during warmups on Friday.

Washington has called up Philipp Grubauer from the Hershey Bears to back up Braden Holtby on Saturday.

Neuvirth apparently injured his right leg when he stepped on a puck coming out of the tunnel for warmups. As you can see from the video from CSN Washington below, he had a tough time just getting off the ice to return to the dressing room.

Braden Holtby got the start against Montreal, and Capitals video coach Brett Leonhardt suited up as the team’s backup goaltender in case of emergency. He still had to work his day job, though, leading to this rather hilarious photo from Capitals PR man Sergei Kocharov.

With Grubauer up, Leonhardt won’t have to suit up any time soon. The Capitals didn’t disclose any timetable for Neuvirth’s return, but they’ll likely reevaluate him this weekend before making any other roster decisions.
