The Washington Capitals have come to terms on a two-year, $4 million contract extension for forward Jason Chimera, the team announced on Friday afternoon. In a surprising twist, the club included the financial terms of the contract, which will account for an annual salary of $2 million against the salary cap.

The 34-year-old forward was playing out the final year of a two-year, $3.5 million contract that carried an annual average value of $1.75 million against the cap, according to CapGeek.com. Chimera would have become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year.

Originally selected with the No. 121 overall pick in the 1997 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Chimera was acquired by Washington in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2009. In 726 career regular season games, he has registered 126 goals and 153 assists for 279 points, while averaging 13:48 of ice-time per game.
