Jimmy Howard injury: Red Wings goalie out 2-4 weeks with MCL sprain

Howard joins a long list of injured Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings will play without their franchise goalie for the next 2-4 weeks while Jimmy Howard recovers from an MCL sprain.

Howard left practice early on Wednesday morning after tweaking his knee, and the Red Wings called up goaltender Peter Mrazek from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL within a few hours. It wasn’t until Friday afternoon that the Red Wings announced the extent of his injury. Howard is struggling this season with a 6-8-7 record, a 2.65 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.

Jonas Gustavsson will get the majority of the starts for Detroit while Howard is out. Gustavsson has played terrifically this season, going 8-1-2 with a 1.93 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.

This is yet another setback in what has been an injury-plagued season for the Red Wings. Pavel Datsyuk just returned from a seven-game absence with a concussion while captain Henrik Zetterberg is on long-term injured reserve with a herniated disc.
