Shane Doan hasn't appeared in a game for the Phoenix Coyotes in more than two weeks and on Friday night the team revealed why: He's being treated for a tick-borne bacterial illness that affects cells in the lining of blood vessels.

The Coyotes revealed on Friday night why Shane Doan has not played since early December.

“Shane is receiving antibiotics for Rocky Mountain spotted fever symptoms and he’s showing improvement,” Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said in a statement released by the team on Friday evening. “Shane’s actually begun light workouts in Glendale but his status, as of today, is ‘week to week’ versus ‘day to day.’ Everybody responds differently to medications so there’s still some uncertainty. The good news is he’s progressing and we’ll continue to monitor his progress.
“He’s disappointed but he’s in good spirits,” Maloney added. “The good thing is he’s feeling better every day. If he was stuck in neutral that’s different, but he isn’t. He’s getting more energy each day and becoming more active. Hopefully that trend continues.”
In 27 games this season Doan has scored a team-high 12 goals to go with 11 assists.
The Coyotes are currently in fifth-place in the Pacific Division with an 18-10-6 record. They are currently three points out of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. The team has won just two of its seven games without Doan, posting a 2-3-2 record.
