At the 7:53 mark of the first period of the Buffalo-Toronto game on Friday, less than a minute after Matt Moulson gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead, one of the most unlikely plays in the NHL this season happened: John Scott, noted enforcer and feared heavyweight fighter, scored a goal.
That is Scott's first goal of the season and just the second of his NHL career. Friday was also his 200th NHL game. He scored his only other goal on Nov. 15, 2009, as a member of the Minnesota Wild in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The only players in NHL history to have played in at least 200 games and scored just two goals (or fewer) are Scott, Brad Brown, David Harlock, Christian LaFlamme and Don Spring.
Before Friday, Scott had appeared in 19 games for the Sabres this season, recording no points, generating just three shots on goal and recording 46 penalty minutes. He served a seven-game suspension for an illegal hit to the head of Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson earlier in the year.
