Flames vs. Canucks: Brian McGrattan ejected for elbowing Andrew Alberts

McGrattan could face league discipline for the play.

Calgary Flames forward Brian McGrattan has made a name for himself by playing on the edge without crossing the line. That changed Sunday, when McGrattan was ejected for elbowing Vancouver Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts.

The play occurred in the opening minutes of the game. As Alberts skated in his own zone with the puck along the boards, McGrattan came out of nowhere to deliver a hard hit.

As you can tell, Alberts probably blacked out. McGrattan had to immediately answer for the hit, as Tim Sestito challenged him to a fight. McGrattan was assessed a five-minute major for fighting, a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct. The league will likely take a look at the play to determine whether it warrants a suspension.
