World Junior Championship: Germany upsets Czech Republic, 3-0

In a stunning turn of events, the Czech Republic went from pending quarterfinalists to relegation round candidates following a 3-0 loss to Germany on Monday morning.

After a shootout victory over the Canadians on Saturday, the Czech Republic were primed to take a commanding stance in the 2014 World Junior Championship. The Germans had acted as the whipping child of the tournament, having suffered lopsided losses against the United States (8-0), Slovakia (9-2) and Canada (7-2). This, essentially, provided the Czech Republic a golden opportunity to earn three points before its final match of the preliminary round against Slovakia on Tuesday.

Germany opened the scoring nearly 15 minutes into the opening stanza with a goal from Western Michigan University commit Frederik Tiffels. Tiffels recorded points on all three German tallies, including the final goal of the contest, which brought his final stat line to two goals and a primary assist. The second German goal was scored by Dominik Kahun in the second period (Kahun also recorded an assist on Tiffels first goal).

Slovakia is scheduled to play Canada at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, which will have significant impact on the importance of its game against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
