NHL TV ratings 2013: Kings vs. Red Wings up from a year ago despite season low

All things considered, Kings-Red Wings can probably be chalked up as another decent performance for the NHL on NBC.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

This was the week where I was kind of preparing for the worst from the NHL’s Sunday afternoon game on NBC. Just because I wondered who exactly would watch a Kings-Red Wings game at 12:30 p.m. ET. Not only is it 9:30 a.m. PT in Los Angeles, but the Kings had to share, essentially, the same timeslot with the red hot Clippers, who were taking on the Knicks over at ABC.

All that considered, the NHL on NBC did just fine, despite hitting another season low rating. The Kings-Red Wings game, which saw a thrilling finish, drew a 1.1 overnight. As I said, that was the lowest number of the season. It was still, however, a nine percent increase from the game on the comparable date last year (WSH vs. NYR, Feb. 12, 2012: 1.0). I’m looking into getting local ratings from NBC, and will update this post should they come in.

Next week may see an uptick in ratings with NBC’s branded Hockey Day in America doubleheader returning for a third year. I’m on the lookout particularly for some good numbers from the early Penguins-Sabres game.
