In the box: Dallas makes it’s way to the improved ratings winner circle
The Stars are catching up to the Mavericks, and Joe Buck is trying to call hockey.

*The Stars are one of those teams we haven’t heard much about in terms of local TV ratings, we just know that nationally, people kind of aren’t interested. It’s good to see, however, that on a local level, the Stars are thriving in what I’m told is called “the Metroplex” (no one told me this, I heard someone say it on a live album recorded in Dallas years ago and I’ve just gone off that). The Stars are averaging a 1.0 rating in a pretty big market on FS Southwest. It’s nearly double the 0.51 the team was averaging last season. It’s also catching up with their winter mates, the Mavericks, who’s ratings have tumbled from a 3.0 to a 1.7 this season.
*Speaking of local ratings for teams we haven’t heard much from, the numbers are in from the Kings-Red Wings game on Sunday. The game drew a 7.4 rating in Detroit. Aside from the 9.5 rating their game against the Sharks on last year’s Hockey Day in America scored, this was higher than the local rating for every Red Wings game on NBC going back to early 2011. For example, the ratings for Sunday’s game well eclipsed the rating in Detroit for the much-hyped “Thanksgiving Showdown” between the Wings and Bruins in November of 2011. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, the Kings hit a respectable 1.1, down a bit from the 1.5 for Blackhawks-Kings on Jan. 19 to open the season.
*Announcers for upcoming games this week: Dave Strader and Brian Engblom will call tonight’s tussle between the Bruins and Rangers. Mike Emrick, Eddie Olczyk and Pierre McGuire handle the Wednesday Night Rivalry game of St. Louis-Detroit, as well as Sunday’s Kings-Blackhawks game for Hockey Day in America. Strader and Engblom will call the late game on NBC Sports Network, Capitals-Rangers, on Sunday. The early game between the Penguins and Sabres will be handled by TSN stalwart Gord Miller and Rangers color analyst Joe Micheletti.
*Finally, this is something that’s swirled around the hockey internet the past 24 hours, but here’s Joe Buck attempting to call a little bit of Blues hockey last night.
