Hockey Day in Canada once again proved that the CBC has the attention of no less than a million Canadians for around 12 hours of their Saturday, but the numbers were slightly down in some dayparts (or, you know, TV speak for “parts of the day”... television is so fascinating, you guys!) from last year’s mythmaking celebration of the sport.
NHL TV ratings 2013: ‘Hockey Day’ up in primetime, down early and late
The Maple Leafs-Canadiens game went up, while regional action in the afternoon and Flames-Canucks at 10 p.m. ET went down.

2.4 million people tuned into CBC’s 7 p.m. ET broadcast of Maple Leafs-Canadiens. That’s up four percent from last year’s telecast in the same timeslot on Hockey Day, which was... you guessed it, Maple Leafs-Canadiens. Still, impressive that a blowout game like this still drew blockbuster-type audiences.
At 2 p.m. ET, CBC split the country between a forgettable Oilers-Red Wings game and an utterly unwatchable Senators-Jets tilt. They scored 1.05 million viewers between them, down five percent from last year’s 2 p.m. ET regional split, which featured Jets-Penguins and Oilers-Sens and kept the attention of 1.1 million Canadians.
The 10 p.m. ET game was another blowout, as the Canucks easily handled the Flames to the tune of 1.47 million viewers. This was down just a tick from the 1.49 million that watched the Canucks and Flames on Hockey Day last year, and just another tick down from the 1.5 million who watched the Canucks-Flames game on Hockey Day 2011. Maybe we change up the matchups a little bit for next year, eh? Overall, another beautiful display of how insane Canada is for this sport.
