NHL trade rumors: Maple Leafs looking West for goalie help?

A daily round-up of the trade rumors circulating in the NHL. Tuesday’s edition features the Winnipeg Jets grappling with a deep defense corps, the Maple Leafs contemplating a rocky goaltending situation and the Flyers potentially looking to upgrade their offense.

USA TODAY Sports

* Gary Lawless believes the Winnipeg Jets could be willing to part with the services of 23-year-old defenseman Paul Postma. Originally selected with the No. 205 pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, Postma has played in 15 career NHL games, which includes all 11 games in the 2013 season.

Lawless believes general manager Ken Cheveldayoff could look to use the team’s depth at defense to improve other areas, via The Winnipeg Free Press:

Cheveldayoff, with the impending return of all-star Byfuglien and the burgeoning Bogosian, is on the precipice of having eight NHL-calibre defencemen at his disposal and the rest of the league has started to sniff around his roster.

* While James Reimer is not expected to miss an extended period of time, Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star is thinking proactively about options to replace him if the injury keeps him out longer than expected.

While Roberto Luongo is still floating around, McGran believes California might be a better scouting spot for the Leafs' needs, via TheStar.com:

It's also believed Anaheim would be willing to move Jonas Hiller, who has lost his No. 1 job to rookie Viktor Fasth. Carlyle has a relationship with Hiller and the Leafs have used the Ducks like a pipeline in recent years.

The defending Stanley Cup champion L.A. Kings might be tempted to move highly regarded backup Jonathan Bernier.

* Pierre LeBrun of ESPN believes that the Philadelphia Flyers might look to upgrade their roster with a forward or an offensive defenseman.

Contrary to some beliefs, the team will not be looking to upgrade the goaltender position as Ilya Bryzgalov has comforted general manager Paul Holmgren, via ESPN.com:

If and when the Flyers ever make a trade between now and April 3, my suspicion is that Holmgren will have offense in mind, whether that’s a forward or even an offensive defenseman.
Interestingly enough, the one area that has not been an issue is the one place where everyone was pointing before the season began. Ilya Bryzgalov has been just fine, thank you, his 2.27 goals-against average (11th in NHL) and .921 save percentage (12th) solid numbers indeed.

* Elliotte Friedman touches on a few players he believes could be available for trade in his "30 thoughts" column. Rumors include restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard and Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Penner.
