Rangers vs. Lightning: New York outshoots Tampa Bay, 20-3, in 1st period

It’s the most shots allowed in one period all season.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Rick Nash's return from an undisclosed injury has impacted the Rangers' offense quicker than anybody expected.

The Rangers outshot a scrambling Lightning squad, 20-3, in the first period on Thursday night in a display of complete dominance, walking off the ice for intermission with a 2-1 lead. Nash was seemingly everywhere in the first period, registering four shots on goal. He nearly converted on a slick deke midway through the period but was stopped by Mathieu Garon.

The 20 shots allowed were the most in a single period all season. For those of you wondering, the record is 25 by the Washington Capitals in 1999.

Meanwhile, that’s the fewest shots in a period by Tampa Bay all season.
