Capitals vs. Panthers: Holtby goes old-school with sweet tape-to-tape assist

Who doesn’t love goalie assists?

The above video brings back some fond memories of Marty Turco and Marty Brodeur in their heydays.

With the Capitals on a power play early in the second period, Stephen Weiss cleared the zone for the Panthers. Caps goalie Braden Holtby came out of his crease to retrieve it and immediately fired off a cross-ice saucer to Troy Brouwer's stick blade. The forward shot the puck in stride past Jose Theodore to give the Caps a 2-0 edge.

It was a pretty sweet and pretty rare goal. These days you don’t really get to see goaltenders take shots down the ice, and it clearly caught the Panthers flat-footed coming off a line change. Nice to see Troy Brouwer giving Holtby a point of recognition on his way to the bench for that old-school pass.

Right now the Capitals are up 3-0 in the second period after a Joel Ward goal. Quite the turnaround considering how poorly they've played lately.
