Forward Alexander Semin agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $35 million with the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday. The Hurricanes signed Semin to a one-year deal last offseason, and now he'll be a major part of the organization through the 2017-2018 season.

“We’re very happy to retain Alex,” Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. “Alex is an elite player and has been a major contributor to the Hurricanes having a very strong top line.”
Semin, who is 29 years old, has 30 points in 30 games this season, which ranks second on the team behind only center Eric Staal. Semin is tied for 11th in the NHL in assists with 22 and tied for 10th with a +18 plus/minus rating. Prior to joining the Hurricanes, he spent seven seasons with the Washington Capitals and scored a career-high 40 goals during the 2009-2010 season.
