The Blackhawks never fell far from their early success, and have now locked up the regular season championship.
The Blackhawks clinched first-place in the league with their win Wednesday night over the Edmonton Oilers. The victory gave them 75 points through 46 games, one more than the Pittsburgh Penguins could earn if that team wins their final two games.
Despite losing goaltender Ray Emery early in the game to a lower body injury, the Blackhawks didn’t lose a step all night.
The team began the season with an incredible point streak that made them the early favorites for the Presidents’ Trophy, and though they have come back down to earth in the second half of the season, they have continued earning points at an impressive rate. They are undoubtedly one of the favorites heading into the postseason.
By finishing first overall, Chicago has guaranteed home ice throughout the playoffs, beginning with their match-up against the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.
