Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will be seeking medical clearance to return to game action, according to Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Sidney Crosby injury: Penguins captain seeks medical clearance
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is hoping to be medically cleared for game action. The question still remains when he will be able to return.
Molinari reports that Crosby will seek clearance on either Thursday or Friday with the hope of rejoining the team for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal next week. Based upon the report, it appears as though Crosby will not return prior to the end of the regular season.
The Penguins captain sustained a broken jaw after being hit in the face with a shot on March 30. It is believed that Crosby’s jaw was broken into several pieces as opposed to a clean break and required titanium plates to mend the injury. Fortunately, he was not required to have his jaw wired shut.
Following the injury, it was speculated that Crosby would attempt to play in a few regular season games in order to prepare for the playoffs. Pittsburgh has two games remaining this season.
Crosby resumed skating on April 15 but has yet to participate in a full practice with teammates. He is expected to keep wearing a lower shield on his helmet in order to protect his jaw.
In 36 games this season, Crosby registered 56 points (15 goals and 41 assists). Prior to action on Wednesday night, he still retained ownership to the league lead in total points and assists. However, Tampa Bay Lightning forwards Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos tied Crosby's mark against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, with St. Louis taking over the total points lead (58), as well as the assists lead (42).
