The Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings began NHL's game Tuesday night by trading power play goals midway through the first period of Game 1.
Ducks vs. Red Wings Game 1: Tied 1-1 after the 1st period
The long-distance battle has begun.
Nick Bonino opened scoring at 10:24 for the Ducks, but Daniel Cleary answered less than six minutes later, sending the teams to the first intermission tied at 1-1.
Bonino's goal came while Wings agitator Jordin Tootoo was in the box for crosschecking Andrew Cogliano. Cleary's came on a deflection with Daniel Winnik still in the box, just seconds after a Red Wings 5-on-3 had expired.
The Ducks, who opened on home ice, outshot the Wings 7-6 in a close first period. Typical of a Game 1, the two teams came out hitting and looking to establish an elevated level of intensity as the playoffs get underway.
With NHL realignment coming next season, this is the last time the Wings will have to travel three time zones away in a first-round series. The Ducks are hoping the Red Wings never forget these long-distance trips.
