Cory Schneider injury: Roberto Luongo to start Game 1

Luongo will start in place of Schneider for Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal against the San Jose Sharks.

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo confirmed he will be starting in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.

Luongo started the team's final two games of the regular season after Cory Schneider sustained an unidentified injury. Despite Schneider's claims on Tuesday that he was ready to resume playing, it appears head coach Alain Vigneault and/or the team's medical staff are not yet comfortable allowing him to return.

The decision to go with Luongo likely isn't performance based as he struggled in his last start, allowing seven goals on 37 shots in the team's 7-2 loss against the Edmonton Oilers. Schneider held his opponents to one goal in each of his last two starts before the injury.

Luongo has yet to face San Jose this season, with Schneider making all three starts (0-2-1, 2.94 GAA, .902 save percentage).

Schneider was not made available to media after practice on Wednesday. It remains unclear who will act as backup.
