Bruins vs. Maple Leafs Game 6 Update: Dougie Hamilton meets Ryan O’Byrne

The teams were scoreless through the first period, but players were ready to hit, goalies were ready to save, and fans were ready to salute mom.

USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Maple Leafs need a win in Game 6 to stay alive, while the Boston Bruins hope to withstand the Leafs' best push and avoid a Game 7. The teams were scoreless at the first intermission after exchanging hits and futile power plays.

John-Michael Liles put things off to an ominous start when the Leafs defenseman took a delay of game penalty 2:12 into the game for sending the puck over the glass in the defensive zone. But the Leafs killed that penalty off, allowing only one shot to get to James Reimer, who made eight saves in the period.

The Leafs received one power-play opportunity and got three shots through to Tuukka Rask, but Rask answered those as well as four others in the period.

Among the big hits in the period was a Ryan O'Byrne blow to Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton, which left Hamilton wobbly-legged:

Looked like Hamilton fell into it, doubling his pain and sudden loss of balance.

That’s playoff hockey. The teams are hitting. The goalies are making the saves. And the fans have come out with explanatory notes for mom on Mother’s Day:
