Red Wings vs. Blackhawks Game 1 update: Teams trade goals in 1st

Marian Hossa and Damien Brunner scored just minutes apart in the 1st period.

The first period of Game 1 of the second-round series between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings ended in a 1-1 tie.

The game was physical early, beginning with Justin Abdelkader and Michal Rozsival coming together in the corner. Abdelkader gets the worst of it as his head feels the wrath of both the boards AND Rozsival's stick:

Abdelkader would miss a few shifts before returning to the game.

Marian Hossa scored the opening goal of the game on the power play on Chicago's third shot of the game:

But Detroit would strike back less than two minutes later with this goal from Damien Brunner:

Andrew Shaw took two penalties in the period, both against Jakub Kindl. This is his second one, which was called boarding, but was really more of a crazy accidental flying elbow:

The Chicago penalty kill continued to be dominant this post-season, and Detroit failed to score on both of their power plays. The shots were 7-6 in favor of the Red Wings at the end of the period.
