Lars Eller suffers bloody injury after Eric Gryba hit
Montreal’s Lars Eller went down hard after a hit by Ottawa’s Eric Gryba.
At the 13:28 mark of the second period of the game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators, Montreal's Lars Eller had his eyes on the puck and didn't see Ottawa's Eric Gryba coming. The result was a huge open-ice hit with some bloody consequences.
First, the hit:
And then, the blood:
Yikes.
Gryba was given a five-minute major for interference and a game misconduct.
It’s tough to tell from the replay exactly what happened to Eller here. It’s possible that the hit knocked him out cold and then he was cut when he fell face-first on to the ice.
Eller was taken off the ice on a stretcher.
According to Renaud Lavoie, Lars Eller left the arena in an ambulance headed for the hospital. He suffered a broken nose, a concussion, and lost some teeth on the play.
UPDATE: The Ottawa Sun newspaper will celebrate Eller’s injury on the front cover of their paper tomorrow. That’s pretty poor taste, whether you think this was a dirty hit or not:
