Capitals vs. Rangers Game 1 Update: Capitals score three in second period

The Rangers entered the second period with a 1-0 lead over the Capitals. Things sure changed in a hurry.

If the first period between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers had bogged down to a snoozefest, the second period was the perfect antidote.

After being badly outshot in the first period, the Rangers turned the shot table and outshot the Capitals 16-9 in the second period. Unfortunately for them, that did not translate into extending their lead. Quite the opposite, in fact.

First, Alex Ovechkin tied it on the power play with this clever read of a rebound off the end boards:

Eight minutes later, things got worse for the Rangers in a hurry.

Steven Oleksy found Marcus Johansson with a lengthy stretch pass that split the Rangers defense and allowed Johansson to break in alone to beat Rangers Henrik Lundqvist.

With the Verizon Center still buzzing from that goal, 46 seconds later Jason Chimera simply spun and threw a puck at the net from the left wing boards that found its way through Lundqvist.

Just like that, the game had completely turned around. The Capitals enter the third period with a 3-1 lead.
