For the second consecutive period, the Detroit Red Wings scored before the period was 65 seconds old. They lead Game 2 of their playoff series with the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 3-1.
Ducks vs. Red Wings Game 2 Update: Detroit scores early again, Koivu gets one back
The Red Wings are really getting the hang of this early goal thing.
Johan Franzen knocked in a rebound on a power play just 1:04 into the period to give Detroit what looked like an insurmountable lead. But Anaheim finally got one back midway through the period, Saku Koivu scoring on the power play off a feed from fellow ageless wonder Teemu Selanne.
Franzen's goal was particularly amusing, mostly for Daniel Winnik's role of doing nothing on the sequence.
Trying to kill the Wings power play, Winnik lost his stick and was powerless to help as the Wings passed the puck back and forth, back and forth. On the rear angle replay (see below), his confusion is visible as he drifts back into the play, inching closer to the net, hoping to be able to do something, ANYTHING.
He didn’t come up with any ideas until after Franzen had scored. That idea? Might as well knock Franzen to the ice, of course:
The Wings lead 3-1 at the second intermission. Anaheim is outshooting them 21-17. A win would tie the series at 1-1 before they go back to Detroit for Game 3.
