The NHL announced the three finalists for the Mark Messier Leadership Award on Monday morning, which is presented annually to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities on and off the ice. While opinion is solicited from fans and league personnel, the winner of the award is solely decided by the award’s namesake, Mark Messier.
Mark Messier Award 2013: Daniel Alfredsson, Dustin Brown, Jonathan Toews named finalists
The three finalists for the 2013 Mark Messier Award were announced on Monday morning.

Daniel Alfredsson of the Ottawa Senators, Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks have been named as the three finalists.
Alfredsson is the NHL’s longest-serving active captain and is involved with several charitable foundations. Notable affiliations include the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health and the Sens Foundation.
Brown has acted as the Kings’ captain for the last five seasons. He donates $50 to charity for every hit he is credited with, which is something he has done since the 2008-09 season. Brown is involved with several charities, including the Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and KABOOM!, which receive donations as part of his hit-driven initiative. This effort has resulted in $60,000 worth of donations since its inception.
Toews has acted as the Blackhawks’ captain since the 2008 season. He is involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and visits with patients at Chicago’s Misericordia (a home for developmental disabilities) and the children’s hospital. Last fall, he participated in a charity hockey game in his hometown of Winnipeg, which raised $80,000 for the local children’s hospital and the Dreams Factory.
The winner of the award is expected to be announced sometime during the Stanley Cup Final.
