Thanks to some costly mistakes by the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Ottawa Senators ended the first period of Game 4 in the series with a 2-1 lead.

The Senators scored early while shorthanded and added another goal late in the period, and lead 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The Senators opened the scoring on an incredible shorthanded goal from Milan Michalek:
That was the second shorthanded goal of the series for the Senators.
The Penguins got another power-play opportunity just a few minutes later, but again failed to score on the chance. The team looked disjointed, rattled, and lacking in confidence with the man advantage.
After a prolonged sequence in which Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson was the star of the period, Pittsburgh finally managed to put one past him. James Neal tied the game, 1-1, at 14:56:
But the tie wouldn't last long. Ottawa would get another goal at 16:15, this time from Kyle Turris, after Tomas Vokoun couldn't control a rebound:
The Penguins had the lead in shots, 16-11, at the first intermission.
