The Phoenix Coyotes have extended the contract of Brad Treliving, the team announced Thursday afternoon. Treliving has acted as the club's vice president of hockey operations and assistant general manager for the past seven seasons.

Despite their uncertain future, the Phoenix Coyotes have come to terms on an extension with their assistant general manager.

With the exception of acknowledging that it is a multi-year deal, the Coyotes were unwilling to release the specific terms of the contract.
Treliving’s responsibilities include acting as the general manager of the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Portland Pirates, as well as acting as a consultant on all player personel decisions. He also manages the amateur and pro scouting departments.
The most important dynamic to the extension is the franchise’s ability to secure front-office personel. Obviously, the Coyotes have been battling a tumultuous ownership situation since the NHL took over control of the franchise in 2009. General manager Don Maloney has stated that maintaining a consistent management group helps keep the franchise stabilized, at least, from a hockey operations perspective.
Retaining Treliving’s services appears to be an attempt to achieve this.
Maloney still needs to handle the uncertain future of head coach Dave Tippett as his contract is up on June 30. Tippett has previously stated that he hopes to remain with the Coyotes but the ownership situation is a road block. Commissioner Gary Bettman insinuated yesterday that time is running out and that the situation needs to be resolved in the near future.
