Alex Ovechkin won the Hart Trophy, P.K. Subban won the Norris and Sergei Bobrovsky won the Vezina as the NHL announced their yearly award winners.

    So what sets Ovechkin apart from nominees John Tavares and Sidney Crosby? While Tavares was undoubtedly carrying his squad at times, the Islanders were never in the dire straits the Capitals found themselves in midway through the season. Ovechkin’s resurgence helped a team most had written off make a run to the playoffs.

    As for Crosby, the pace he set in the first half of the year can’t be ignored. If he had stayed healthy, he might’ve run away with this award. But when he missed the final month, the Penguins kept winning while Ovechkin dragged Washington back into the playoff hunt. Arguments could be made for both players, but Ovechkin stole the show in the final month and clearly left a strong impression on the voters.

    Subban wins the Norris

    Subban finished the year with 38 points, tied with fellow nominee Kris Letang for the league lead among defensemen. He was also one of the game’s best on the power play with 26 points.

    But offense has always been a strength for Subban. What set him apart this season was his improved defensive abilities. His plus/minus in 2013 was plus-12. Two years ago, he was minus-8. The marked improvement came while playing against top competition in Montreal’s top defensive pair. After gaining a reputation as a pest, he cut his penalty minutes down to 57 (49th in the league).
