The first period of Game 4 between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins saw the Blackhawks come out strong, driving the play for the first half of the frame. The Bruins pushed back late, and the period ended tied, 1-1.
Blackhawks vs. Bruins Game 4 update: Handzus and Peverley score in 1st
A shorthanded goal opened the scoring for the Blackhawks, but the Bruins responded on a power play to tie the game.
The Bruins had the game's first power play when Johnny Oduya took a penalty for interference, but it was the Blackhawks who would take advantage of the special teams play. Michal Handzus had a shorthanded goal after a perfect backhand assist from Brandon Saad:
Unfortunately for Chicago, that assist didn’t mark the beginning of a great game for Saad. He gave the goal back with a bad giveaway on another Boston power play late in the period:
Rich Peverley had the goal for Boston, his first since May 6th against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He beat Corey Crawford cleanly on the glove side, despite Crawford seeming to have all the time in the world to get ready.
The period was a physical one, with the angry play that took over at the end of Game 3 showing up early in Game 4:
The Blackhawks had the edge in shots in the first period, 12-9.
